DR ALEXANDER LEZHANSKY DDS ANSWERS QUESTION THAT MANY PATIENT ASK ABOUT PERMANENT PORCELAIN VENEERS Q AND A
CAN PORCELAIN VENEERS BE WHITENED?
Porcelain Veneers don’t change color like natural teeth or composite filling. You should think of the material which veneers are made of like an expensive fine china plate or coffee cup in essence it is the same material so therefore they can’t be stained or whitened. So when choosing a color pick one you will be happy with for a long time, think of veneers like a permanent whitening of your teeth.
CAN PORCELAIN VENEERS BE REMOVED?
Veneers can be removed by shaving them off which is the same process as when you initially had them done. If the teeth were shaved down underneath then something needs to be replace the veneers that were removed with a new veneer, composite bonding or a crown. You would need to replace the old veneers with the new ones but if you had no prep veneers then nothing needs to be replace them because they will only return to the same condition that the teeth were in on the day of receiving the veneer. polishing after removing them would be recommended.
CAN PORCELAIN VENEERS FALL OFF?
Yes, veneers can fall off. They can fall off for several reasons either the tooth opposites the veneer is hitting to hard this usually happen in the beginning after placing the veneers. It can happen later which may be due to the fact your teeth had shifted over time. The good news is in most cases it can easily be glued back on and adjusted so it doesn’t continue to happen. Only part of a veneer can fall off, in this case it might be more difficult to glue back on and a new veneer maybe needed.
CAN VENEERS FIX CROOKED TEETH?
Yes, veneers can make your teeth look straight because the teeth can be reduced to be in line with the other teeth or make the veneer thicker to make the tooth look aligned.
CAN VENEERS BE REPLACED?
Yes, veneers can be replaced if one breaks of your gum line recedes we can replace the veneer. Depending on the condition of the other veneer it may be recommended to replace all of them in order to match better.
CAN VENEERS FIX OVERBITE?
This is a difficult problem to fix with veneers, because veneers make your teeth bigger and since an overbite is when your upper teeth cover to much of your lower it would worsen the problem. The better treatments for an overbite is usually braces such as Invisalgn. The other option would be to change the bite by doing crowns and veneer on all your lower teeth.
CAN VENEERS GO OVER CROWNS?
Yes, you can put a veneer over a crown. However not recommended since the cost of doing that would be the same as replacing the crown. You are better off just changing the crown because when you veneer a crown now you have more points of possible failure.
CAN VENEERS BREAK?
Yes, if you are able to break your own tooth, and teeth are made of the strongest material in our bodies, you can break a veneer. Veneers can break if you bite into something really hard for example edge of a fork, sunflower seeds or crab legs.
CAN VENEERS GET CAVITIES?
Veneer don’t get cavities since they are inorganic material bacteria does not affect them. However, the tooth itself covered by the veneer can get them, the good news most of the cavities can be fixed since the veneer is only covering the front of the tooth. So unless you have not been to the dentist in a long time it should be easily fixed.
CAN VENEERS REPLACE A MISSING TEETH?
Veneers can not replace a missing tooth because a veneer is only a covering of a tooth. A three unit bridge using veneers on the adjacent teeth can be made however in most cases not recommended since most veneers are made of thin material for esthetic reasons the connection to fake tooth is thin and can be broken and not fixable. A much better option such as a dental implant is available.
